John Barleycorn is a personification of Malt Liquor.

There have been many oral tradition tales, songs, and stories of this personification.

The first broadside written of the character was in 1624. However, the name had already been in nomenclature for at least 50 years. Robert Burns later penned the character into a the poem "Tam O'Shanter" around 1782.

John Barleycorn is generally considered a reiteration of the earlier Pagan figure Beowa.
